Since 2022, DTAN has crafted the visual world of Lucy Kruger & The Lost Boys, an art pop noise project fronted by Berlin-based/South African born musician, Lucy Kruger. We have handled everything from album art to record covers, posters and promotional materials. It’s an experiment in translation, creating visuals that match their sound: raw, dreamy, a little bit dangerous.

Heaving

Our first collaboration created an unsettling beauty through bold colors and raw textures. For ‘Heaving’, we went dark and delicious. Uneasy on purpose. Even the lyrics got special treatment – we laid them out exactly how they’re sung, letting the rhythm guide the design.

We loved shaping so many visual elements with this release, from album artwork and single covers to Spotify canvas animations. The project allowed us to develop an innovative lyric design system for the record sleeve, creating a cohesive visual language across both digital and physical formats.

Shot between Berlin and Cape Town, we unified different elements through Riso printing, adding texture and mood. The lyrics videos, Howl and Burning Building was created in collaboration with Cult Wife.

Music Video

Stereoscope

Stereoscopes take two pictures of an object at slightly different angles, so when seen together the images can show depth. So, for the single ‘Stereoscope’, we shot two videos and blended them into one dreamy piece, with layers of movement and shadow. We printed 148 frames from each video, then used cutting knives. Each hand-cut piece added its own character, creating beautiful little imperfections. Finally, we scanned it and stitched it all back together digitally.

Lucy described the 2024 album as an experience in distant collaboration, born in lockdown’s strange isolation.

A Human home

We created this collision of worlds: part comfort and part distance, part introspection and part connection. Paper-cut figures dance Matisse-style while custom typography twirls up the edges.

Mixing media underpinned all the assets for visual metaphor – Riso prints with paper cuts, traditional serifs with unconventional flourishes, and touches of gold against moody purples.
